Barebarefoot1 EasyCare's hoof boots were recently aired on ABC News in a featured clip about new developments in hoof protection. EasyCare Dealer, High Performance Hooves Clinic Is Huge Success!

Jay and Q DeHart, EasyCare dealers and operators of High Performance Hooves out of Stevensville, Montana held their first natural hoof care clinic this past month in Corvallis.  Despite the snow and ice, Q reported that the clinic was a huge success, with 75 people attending, some from as far as Southern California!  When Jay spoke on the topic of booting there were lots of questions and interest.  Dawn Easyboot_girls1Merrill (Team Easyboot Member) came along to help and manned the table with the boots and pads.  Dawn addressed many questions on booting in regards to the advancements in booting and hoof boots; the ease of putting them on as well as the many benefits they offer the horse. For those of you interested Jay and Q will be holding additional clinics in the Whitefish/Kalispell, MT area the last weekend in May.  Contact them or the Backcountry Horsemen of Kalispell for more information.  They will also be giving a brief Barefoot Hoof Care chat and demo at the 2008 Horse Expo, at the Sapphire Event Center in Corvallis, MT on Saturday, April 12th.  See their website:  www.sapphireeventcenter.com for more info on the Horse Expo.Clinic_attendance1

EasyCare Dealer Jay DeHart Gets Press In Montana

Dehart Photo by MICHAEL GALLACHER/Missoulian

It's taken years of training to prepare Jay DeHart for his career in natural barefoot hoof care for horses. DeHart believes that horses can survive quite well without horseshoes.

STEVENSVILLE - A couple of years back, Jay DeHart decided he wanted to learn how to shoe his own horses.  So he signed up for classes with a certified farrier in Bozeman and began to study the craft.
The more he learned, the less sense it all made.  DeHart's 20 years as a mechanical engineer probably had something to do with that. He knew a thing or two about physics, energy conversion and fluid dynamics. And as he learned how nature had intended a horse's hoof to expand and contract to absorb its weight as it moved across the landscape, and that movement was vital for its circulatory system, the idea of confining the hoof within a metal shoe seemed strange. A horse's hooves are meant to act as shock absorbers. Putting a constrictive metal shoe around the hoof is about the same as putting a board in the springs of car, DeHart said. The hooves can't absorb that force when they're shod, especially with a rider, he said. Mechanically, it just didn't make any sense to me. I thought there had to be another way. DeHart's search led him to a Missoula bookstore where he discovered a book by natural hoof/horse care guru Jaime Jackson. After years of studying wild horse hooves - which, of course, aren't shod - Jackson developed techniques to mimic what he'd seen. Now, horse lovers like DeHart and his wife, Q, are embracing the idea of letting their mounts go barefoot.
The couple's three horses - an Arab, a draft/quarter horse cross and a miniature - are all without shoes these days. Q takes her Arab on long rides into the rocky Bitterroot Mountains without even the protective rubber boots that are recommended for the newly barefoot mounts.  My horse goes everywhere barefoot,Q said and her feet look beautiful. The more riding you do, the tougher they get. It takes some time for a horse's hooves to readjust to their shoeless environment but that doesn't mean horse owners have to give up their trail rides or hunting trips. While a horse's hoof is getting stronger through regular trimmings, diet and exercise, its owner can outfit it with rubber boots when it ventures out of the pasture. The shoes cost about $100 a pair. The DeHarts have found that front hooves are usually the ones that need the most protection.
It does take some time and patience to make the switch, Q said. Horse owners can also help their mount's hooves adjust with a diet low on sugar (put that sweet feed away), making sure they get plenty of exercise, and adding about 4 inches of pea gravel around the water trough. The gravel stimulates the hooves and the horse's feet respond.  Pea gravel works wonders, DeHart said. DeHart is currently working through the intensive two-year process to become a certified natural hoof practitioner through Jackson's America Association of Natural Hoof Care. I've almost completed all my training, he said.  Working with mentors and peers, I've learned how to trim a horse's hooves to resemble the wear patterns of wild mustangs.
Through mostly word of mouth, DeHart has been finding work around Montana. Every horse presents a different challenge. DeHart's first visit includes a mustang trim and sometimes some advice on how a horse owner might be able to improve the living conditions of their steeds.
A horse's hooves mirror what's going on above, he said.  Trimming is only about 10 percent of this. I often can offer some information that will help steer owners in the right direction for improving their horse's environment. The cost for keeping a horse barefoot is comparable to shoeing, he said. While every horse is different in how often they'll need to be trimmed, DeHart said the average is about once every five weeks. Right now, he charges $40 a trim.
Horse owners who want to learn more about natural hoof care might want to circle March 29 on their calendar. The DeHarts will host a workshop that day at the Bitterroot Valley's Sapphire Event Center in Corvallis. The cost for admission is $30 in advance, $40 at the door. We're planning on offering a lot of information to people, he said.  Hopefully people will get interested. For us, it's all about having healthy horses. That helps everyone in the long run

Hoof Trimming for Barefoot Performance Horses

Sharon O'Brien-Lykins of HorseDesigns.Com in Penn Valley, California created this fun video of her trimmer, Michelle Smith, of Nevada City, California.... Here is what Sharon had to say, "She (Michelle) trims about 200 horses around here and is an excellent trimmer. I used to trim my own horses but got too busy and I'm so happy to have heard of her!  She recommends the EasyCare products and Hoofjack, to her clients, too."

The Black Heritage Riders Cross The USA In EasyCare Hoof Boots

The Black Heritage Riders are going strong as Miles Dean and Sankofa along with Reggie Gough make their way on a journey riding horseback from New York to LA!  Miles Dean, executive director of the New Jersey-based non-profit organization set out on a 6,000-mile trek from New York to California in September.  The 58-year old elementary school teacher is on a mission to educate people about African-American contributions and achievements.  Dean tries to average about 30 miles each day he is on the road and he hopes to reach California by February, which is Black History Month.  Hoof Care Practitioner Carrie Christiansen of Browns Mills, NJ provided Miles horses with a good trim, boots and education on booting.  Dean's horse sports Old Mac G2's in the front and Easyboot Epics behind, all with Comfort Pads.  Check them out in action and click here to track their progress!

Forecasting your EasyCare sales for 2008!

I ran across this article on retail forecasting on the SAS website.  The article "Demand Forecasting in Retail" by Michael Gilliland.   Explains although there are challenges when it comes to forecasting, that ultimately the objective of any retail business is to have the right product, at the right time and in large enough quantities.

Remember forecasting your sales helps EasyCare forecast our sales, in the long run it helps everyone keep items that are in demand, in stock.  Click here to read the entire article.

EasyCare Comfort Pads Testimonial

VanessawaterswebThe comfort pads you sent for me to try on my ringbone horse "Beene" are working wonderfully!! He is sound on all surfaces. Ed and I will certainly tell our "BenTheyre" trail riding readership that we like the pads. The article due next (for Jan 08) is going to talk about our observations on the trend to natural hoof care... utilizing the innovations in hoof protection with increasing trend of travel trail riding hoof care needs. I purchased a "hoofjack", tools, and 3 sets of Bares to test for "real use" for the article. Our farm site is www.bentheyre.com. Readers really like to go to our site if we have some little extra info for them to find when they visit. We are thinking maybe a listing of the items we liked best...

Thanks again for the pads!

Miss Bear Cat

I found great interest in reading the stories of barefoot horses and navicular syndrome on the EasyCare website and decided a few months ago to give Kitty one last chance to heal naturally. It has only been three months but Kitty has almost fully recovered. She stands squarely, does not point and will allow all of her legs to be held and trimmed.

    Easyboot Epic Testimonial

Soon after I purchased Miss Bear Cat (Kitty) 10 years ago as a Western Pleasure Show horse, she was diagnosed as having navicular syndrome, though x-rays showed no real damage. We went through all the typical pads, egg bars, bute but nothing seemed to change things much.

In time Kitty became my trail horse and we enjoyed our Sunday morning rides within the limits of her ability. She would weave left and right down hills, tread cautiously and slowly on hard ground. Eventually she would not stand to be shod in the back because of the difficulty bearing the weight on the front during the process. So Kitty became barefooted in the rear using Easyboots for trail riding.

In her Easyboot Epics front and rear we are off every week for a fast paced trail ride outpacing the horses she always trailed behind. I truly believe that she is passed any problem she has had and I know we will be back at the shows this fall.

Thank you Easyboots. Seeing her in no pain was worth all of the effort!

The benefits of using EasyCare Comfort Pads with EasyCare Hoof Boots

Dscf9105_small It's great to hear from end users when they have found ways to use our products in ways that can help their horses.  Below is a comment from a rider who is in the EasyCare Hoof Boot Contest (currently placing in the top five) who just recently attended the recent Pete Ramey clinic in California.  Comfort Pads are a great accessory item to sell with our EasyCare hoof boots!  If you'd like more information on them or would like to place an order, please contact your sales rep.

An important point I got from the clinic is to use my boots more. I have really only been using the boots for competitions and going barefoot the rest of the time at home and on training rides. I did notice that sometimes my horse seemed to be a little foot sore and a little short strided but I just kind of put it aside thinking it was better to "toughen" up her feet and I would never get her hoofs hard and develop thicker soles by using boots.

I found out I was wrong. What would happen is that my horse would start to walk toe first. Not super obvious but I could tell. Pete implies that as soon as your horse starts walking toe first you start going backward in hoof development. He said I would actually develop a stronger, tougher, better developed hoof using boots and having a properly loaded hoof with a properly working hoof mechanism then gimping along barefoot..

So, that's the main thing I am going to do...to use boots more around home. Also you have to use the foam pads. That I did already and I think they are great.

    The New Easyboot Name is......

New_easycare_hoof_boot_0011 The winner of the contest to name the new boot is...Pete Ramey!  Pete was the only person to suggest the name Easyboot Edge.

It took a lot of time to narrow the names down.  We had nearly 1600 names submitted, in which over 1200 were unique (not duplicated).  We narrowed them down, then voted, narrowed down and voted some more.  Discussed which ones we liked or didn't like, and why.  Then FINALLY we decided on the Easyboot Edge!!!

We will be rigorously testing the new boot and only when we are satisfied that it passes all of our tests will it be released to the public.  We look forward to updating you on the status of the Easyboot Edge!

Don't forget, applications are still being accepted for Team Easyboot, for those that are interested in helping out with the testing process.

    Epic Testimonial...continued....

Here is an update from Danielle.....

8/30: One month already or only? Beautiful full moon at night and now a rising sun with a veil of clouds. Another beautiful day. Assessment of this leg of the trip: 410K, barefoot mostly although some paths are not natural, made of broken rocks and stones. The other paths are not maintained. My prosthetic leg is broken, the pin is lost on the spare one which I replaced with wire. In the meantime I shipped back the broken one, which is the newer one, to be fixed. When it is fixed and when I'll have a shipping address again, they'll ship it to me. I have a new tent to replace the lost one. I lost it the day I broke my prosthetic because I was hoping on one leg and did not attached it well to the horse. I do not think I'll reach the Cathares castles, but the most important is that the horses, my dogs and I are continuing together, happy.

And a note from her Daughter...

8/30: Montbazon: While crossing a village today, a woman offered her her house to stay. But since it was only 3 PM, Danielle declined the offer and wanted to go on until at least 6 PM. The weather changed rapidly and Danielle changed her mind, and was hoping that maybe this lady had a teen ager who could also help her with her phone. She retraced her steps back to the village and tried to find her, unsuccessfully. Meanwhile an other family offered her their house.

Danielle accepted and went to their farm. She put the horses in a field and went to the barn to set up her bed. The hosts insisted on her staying in a bedroom, but Danielle refused. During dinner, one of the children went to the barn and set up a bed for her. Danielle was very surprised and very grateful to such hosts. Danielle put the epic boots on her mares who seems to enjoy them very much. The horse is finally accepting them. I guess he understood the benefit of them for such a long journey.

Adventures in Easyfoam and Easyboot Bare Hoof Boots
    by Carol Layton, Australia
    Carol Layton using Easyfoamed Bares

Hello from Australia. I had a great ride on the weekend on Omani Mr Sqiggle trialling the Easyfoam with four Bares at an endurance ride held at Windeyer, near Mudgee in NSW (New South Wales). I needed to trial the foam for the Shahzada marathon in the last week of August and now I know this is the answer for us. I am totally delighted with the result, no need to be concerned about the possibility of rubbing from the gaiters. I mean I have been able to do 160km rides and 400km marathons with boots and not had any rubbing from gaiters but this foam means it doesn't need to be on my mind. I don't have to fiddle with Sportstape or vetwrap. It was easy to mix the glue together and put the boots on, we just removed the gaiters.

Click on the link below to learn more about using Easyfoam. It is a great product to use for endurance events, or for weekend or week long camping trips with your horse.

Old Mac G-2's To the Rescue
    G2 Testimonial
Georgie Porgie in Old Mac's G2

After our phone conversation today, I wanted to send you a picture of my pony in his new Old Mac G-2's. Georgie Porgie is a 23 yo Welsh pony who foundered about 3months ago.

After the initial dramatic hoof trimming and bandaging, he was extremely tenderfooted and walked slowly and gingerly on his soles, head down, examining every potential bump in his path--not a happy camper. We got our new Old Mac G-2 hoof boots with gaiters, and some frog support inserts, and within about 3 steps, Georgie realized that he could travel pretty much pain free. The head came up, ears were forward, and he walked off with a mission. He even pranced to the field. The boots went on easily, were true fit to the measuring guide, and have not chafed any areas on the foot, even with 14 hrs a day wear.

I'm thankful for Easy Care for offering such a wonderful product that literally got my pony back on his feet and on the road to growing a new foot. The Hoof Boot Upgrade program is a great incentive that makes them very affordable. Your sales representatives were most helpful in helping me choose the right boot and their advice to use Gold Bond powder in the boot before wearing sure keeps the foot clean and dry.

I can highly recommend these boots based on the experience I have had and will spread the word......

    Thanks again!

    Easyboot Epic Testimonial

Below is an email and pictures that I received from a woman whose mother is living out one of her life long dreams!  Check back, as I am hoping to get updates!

    Danielle’s journey.

Img_1991_2  I am writing on behalf of my mother Danielle. She rides horses since a child. She is 61 years old. She has only one leg following an accident when she was 35 years old. She is now on a trip across France starting from Alsace, near Germany, and planning to go all the way to the Cathar country, Carcassone area, Spanish border, and back home. The trip will last about 9 months. She is traveling alone with her 3 horses and 2 dogs. The 2 mares are pregnant and one of them will deliver her foal in April, while still traveling, but almost back home. Her horses are barefoot for over 2 years now. She already went 500 km. But her horses, especially the male, were in pain to be barefoot. We rushed an order of Easyboot Epics to be delivered to an address nearby where she was camping. Since then the horses are going without complaints and seem to love the boots. She already did more than 100 km with the boots and counting. She sleeps outdoors, near lakes if possible. Has solar batteries for her cell phone and recharges her batteries for her camera on a base with a crank.  As for her food supplies (animal and human), she carries 4 days worth and must make it to a village by then. So far so good. But on an earlier expedition, about 4 years ago, she starved and started eating what her dogs were bringing back, or what she found in the forest. This time she is trying not to let that happen again, and keep her routes close by villages when the 3rd day approaches. She is enjoying beautiful sceneries. Meeting wonderful people. And best of all she is enjoying herself. Now with the Easyboot Epics, her journey can only go easier.

    Nadia

8/28: She is by a river "riviere de l'oignon", enjoying the good weather and the forest. One of her mare is wearing 4 boots epic. The male is still refusing to wear them, but it is just a matter of time.... Yesterday Danielle crossed a village and a woman offered her a room in her house because she heard of her and wanted to talk to her about this experience. But Danielle politely declined and went to set up camp in the forest. This experience is to be one with nature and prove to herself that she can do it. The local newspaper was looking for her but was not successful, maybe next time.... Danielle is trying to understand how to use her email with her cell phone. Once she'll be able to do that, she can email us photos and text directly that I will translate into English.
    To be continued....

EasyCare Sponsors Scholarship for The Equine Sciences Academy

EasyCare, Inc. and the Equine Sciences Academy are pleased to announce that EasyCare will be offering a total of eight first-term scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to the Equine Sciences Academy.  Four scholarships will be awarded to the Fall 2007 class, and four to the Spring 2008 class.

Each scholarship has a $1,000 value and will be applied toward first term tuition.  EasyCare will reimburse the student for the scholarship amount once they have successfully completed their first year studies.

Applicants must first apply to and be accepted into the Academy.  Once accepted, students may apply to EasyCare.  Recipients of the
first-term scholarships may also reapply for a second scholarship in the spring. In the event that a student receives a second scholarship, the award would be applied to the second term tuition.

As the field of natural hoof care continues to grow, so will the demand for qualified professionals. EasyCare is excited to be able to assist those looking to make natural hoof care a career. We are currently working on expanding this new scholarship program to include additional programs and organizations that educate and train qualified applicants in the natural care of horse’s hooves.

For more information and application requirements, please contact the Equine Sciences Academy at: http://www.equinesciencesacademy.com.

    Information about the Academy:

The purpose of the Equine Sciences Academy is to educate students in all key aspects of the care and custody of domesticated equines based on the study of the life of the wild horse.

A university format includes comprehensive studies on all required coursework, practical instruction, rigorous testing, and practical exams.  The goal of the Equine Sciences Academy is to be the most comprehensive and professional training program in natural horse and hoof care available.

The program will basically follow a distance learning university format, with the exception of required practicums.  The program is designed as a two year course, but actual completion time may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, scheduling, ability to pass all required elements before progressing, prior experience etc.

EasyCare Epics take to the Donkey Derby

    Dsc01745

This story comes to us from Sally Hug a Hoof Care Practitioner, Dealer out in Oroville, California.  Sally has some amazing stories and this is one of them!

The donkey's name is "Rose" and she is owned by Anne Benoit of Paradise, CA.  Anne and her husband own a Christmas tree farm where people come to cut their own tree.  In addition to Rose, they have several other donkeys and goats for the kids to pet and play with during the holiday season when the tree farm is open.
Rose has foundered at some point in her life, but gets along well with regular hoof care.  However, her real asset (no pun intended) is participating in the annual "Donkey Derby"  during the Paradise "Gold Nugget Days" celebration of the discovery of the 54 pound "Dogtown Nugget".  Click here to learn about the event.

The real challenge of the Donkey Derby is the obstacle course at the end and I have been told that Rose is a pro at it.  However, she needs protection for her little hooves over the rocks and pavement on the course- that's where the Epics come into the picture.  With those EasyCare Epics on her feet, Rose should be a major contender next April!

Thanks again Sally for this great story.  Stay tuned for more updates on Rose and how she does in the 2008 Donkey Derby!

EasyCare on the cover of Trail Blazer, Tack'n Togs AND Equestrian Retailer!

    Equestrian_june07_web Tackntogs_0607_web Trail_blazer_july07_web

    Tbcatalogcoversweb_2

EasyCare was featured on the cover of three different magazines - in the same month!  We have also printed a second addition of the EasyCare product catalog that has a photo from the same shoot as the cover of Trail Blazer.   Boa Horse Boots were featured on the cover of Equestrian Retailer magazine.  Inside the magazine is an article on hoof boots and many photos of EasyCare boots. Tack'nTogs has a great article about hoof boots and how the equine world has discovered the advantages of barefoot.

    EasyCare Easyboot comfort strap

Our new comfort strap comes standard on the Easyboot Epic, Easyboot Bare and the Easyboot Grip. The comfort strap does not have metal teeth, is completely smooth against the hoof and has no sharp edges. Unlike the Easyboot shell, whose durability improves as it cures with age, the softer, more flexible material used in the backstraps can become cracked and brittle over time. Replace an old, cracked or torn comfort strap with a new, soft, pliable comfort strap anytime. No special tools (other than a screwdriver) required. Screws, washers and t-nuts included. Please specify Easyboot Bare or Easyboot Epic size when ordering. Not recommended for use in the Easyboot.  If you are not currently carrying our boot accessories, you may want to check into it, your customers will thank you.  All of our boots have replaceable parts, we don't make disposable products!

    The Grip Goes Rodeo

Pickup man and Hoof Care Practitioner Randy Hensley of Hensley Natural Hoof Care put the Easyboot Grip through its paces.  Randy (shown here) gets the job done this past weekend at at a Bad To The Bone Tour Rodeo in Peru, Iowa.  Randy is riding Frog his eleven year old Registered Quarter Horse gelding in the Easyboot Grip and EasyCare Comfort Pads.  Randy also added an inch of double sided tape between the boot and hoof wall under the buckle as extra insurance against twisting.  Randy said he couldn't be more pleased with the way the boots performed.  He said the boots drew quite a bit of interest and left that day with a few new potential clients!  Thank you Randy for this super testimony.

EasyCare Dealers Excel at Western States Horse Expo

Ec_1_2EasyCare had six fantastic dealers attend the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, CA.  Action Rider Tack, Australian Connection, Christensen Saddlery, The Stagecoach West, Synergist Saddles and Valley Vet.  Dealer reps Chris Freeman and Debbie Schwiebert were on hand at the EasyCare booth to support the dealers as well as educate the public on EasyCare's products with hands on demos allowing everyone a chance to get their hands on the various products.  There was a tremendous interest in barefoot and the necessity of hoof boots.  Debbie had a chance to get out and snap a few photos of some of our dealers and associates.
