Removing Permanent Cleat Covers
I just put up a few photos in an album showing how to remove your permanent cleat covers from your Easyboot Epic. After I remove the cleat covers, I flatten the metal teeth down flat with channel locks, then cover with three layers of duct tape--see my advanced Easyboot Tips album for details on how to do that.
Here's my list of why I do this!
- By removing the permanent cleat covers I am able to get a closer fit around the top of my horses hoof with the boot
- By getting a closer fit, the boot is more likely to stay on, and not turn or twist or cause rubbing problems
- After I remove the cleat covers, I flatten the metal teeth down flat with channel locks. This also allows for a snugger fit around the top of the hoof
- I apply three layers of duct tape over the metal plate that remains
- Using duct tape reduces the chance of any rubbing
- Using duct tape also helps with boot application -- the boots go on and off easier
In 2007 the Epic will come with the new lower profile comfort strap. The comfort strap is great because it is flat (no metal teeth!). These new straps will be great because they are also lower profile, so will work for more horses without them needing to be modified. In addition, the taper part (that is the part where the screws hold the gaiter/boot/strap together) has a bevelled and tapered edge -- it'll do the same basic thing as the duct tape does that I add now (though I still may not be able to stop myself from adding duct tape) :)
Another option is to replace your Comfort Straps or heelstraps with tapers, or order your boots with them already installed.
