Dear Dr. Tom:
In 2000 my Gelding foundered bad in all 4
hooves. I took him to a trusted vet several miles away and he, over a period of
months, got him salvaged. However, I have had two bouts with it since then.
Right now he is foundered again. I feel terrible about it because this
time it is my fault. I didn't watch the calendar close enough and I
went 9 weeks without having him shod. I know better than that, I just got
too busy.
Three days ago I went to get the farrier, a young Amish man,
and my horse was barely getting around. I called the vet who worked on him
before to see if I should leave the shoes off or put them back on. He
told me to put them back on because of the comfort and protection it would
give. That was three days ago. The horse is moving around slow but is still
grazing.
I read your statement on the internet and appreciate so much
you offering to talk to people. I believe I can learn how to trim with some
help. I would prefer to try leaving the shoes off next time. I
haven't read that much about it, just what was in the blogs along with what
you said. COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD READ AND RESEARCH in order
know how to help my pal? We've been through a lot together and I want to help
him and make up for what I've put him through because of my
NEGLECT.
Sincerely,
D
Hi D,
Take a
look at www.hoofrehab.com first, and see if you can read
through all those articles and then see if you can attend a clinic by Pete Ramey
sometime. Also you can click here to see my "trimming manual" on the EasyCare website.
Also,
do an internet search for "barefoot founder horse trimming" and there will be a
lot of stuff come up.
You're on the right track getting the shoes off for
good. They just cause more damage in the long run.
Take care,
Dr. TT
