Aloha Dr. Tom,
I am planning to transition my 8 yr. old QH gelding to barefoot, but believe that I will need to boot him for our trail rides which involve some rocky terrain. I'd like to know which kind of boots you use and/or would recommend as the "best" in your opinion. I've heard that there are problems with boots that admit small rocks that get inside and could lame the horse. I've also heard about some plastic shoes that get glued on. I can't remember the name of this product, but apparently those who use them praise them highly - except for the hassle in gluing them on. What do you know about these?
Thanks for your time,
Paula & Koa
Hi Paula and Koa,
I think the Old Mac's are looking pretty nice after they're recent re-design...more streamline, easier to work with, and they just plain stay on. After losing a few boots myself, I'm more and more a fan of using these when there's a chance the horse may slip one off. Of course the Epics and Bares are also good once they are fitted just right.
I discourage the use of all nailed on shoes, including the plastic ones. They cause the same damage that steel ones cause, sometimes even more damage when the nail clinches loosen and break out the hoof walls. They also can work loose and then the horse steps down on an exposed nail, puncturing the sole.
Take care,
Dr. Tom T.
