Epic Boots

I purchased Frost, a 4 yr old Walking Horse mare for trail riding in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.  We started hitting the trails together and exploring all the hills and hollows, putting on numerous miles each week. Steel shoes were worn out in less than 6 weeks due to the miles and rocky conditions.  I started noticing a small crack forming down both front feet and she seemed to be tripping on the trail more than normal.  My farrier didn't feel this small sand crack was anything to be concerned about and NO the heels weren't starting to contract!  I started doing a little research on my own, reading as much as I could which led me in a very short time to the barefoot movement and Easycare.  I really had my doubts whether a horse could be ridden without shoes in the terrain we have here, but the more I read about the research being done, the success stories of others and endurance riders going bare and/or with boots, I thought why not give it a try, I could put shoes back on if it didn't work, right?  Even though EVERYONE said I was crazy and a horse could not be ridden in this area without being shod, shoes were pulled, natural trim done, Epics fitted and the transition began.  My mare immediately moved out better, stopped tripping and "gave" very seldom no matter what the terrain.  There was softness to her footfall that wasn't there before.  Everything about the ride felt better.  I had no problem with the boots staying on through deep water, mud, gravel bars and rough hillsides.  I started out with boots all the way around, but soon found aside from gravel road; she could go easily with just front ones.  Now a year later the crack has completely grown out and the heels are starting to widen.  Frost can now be ridden bare at times, but I always pack her boots in my stowaway to slip on at a moment's notice.  They will ALWAYS be part of my trail riding gear.  Thank you EasyCare, we couldn't have done it without you!

2007 Easyboot Epic

The 2007 Easyboot Epic, is by far a favorite boot to have in your selection of tack.  Some of the outstanding additions/updates are... the new cast buckle, the improved EasyGaiter and the lower profile Comfort strap.

The new cast buckle is very streamlined with smooth,rounded edges that are more wear-friendly with the boot cable.  Very easy to remove with a screwdriver if you wear it out and needed to do a replacement.  The EasyGaiter is softer and more flexible when rolling back for installation on the hoof.  Gaiter training is still highly recommended as this is a definite time saver as riding time is more important than spending those moments on installation time!!!!  The lower profile Comfort strap (heel strap) is more suited to the barefoot hoof.  The Easyboot Epic stays below the hairline, thus preventing any rubbing issues in the coronary band area.  The parts on the boot are all replaceable, making it a very user friendly piece of horse equipment.  And... the EasyCare website has video clips to view if you needed to do repairs, or actually view the boot installation process.  We have boots in stock and available now, so why not shop at our website or give our friendly staff a call to place your order 1-800-447-8836 and "be one step and a boot ahead" ready for riding season!!!!

Trouble with the ruler?

How accurately can you use a ruler?  We know it is difficult trying to remember all the marks on the ruler are in 1/16" increments.  Well gee aren't there a lot better things out there (like your horse's name) to remember than fractions. 

We encourage you to ask for help with sizing on our EasyCare boots.  We are always glad to help and you can contact us at anytime.  But did you know that sometimes we are asked to help based on a measurement such as "a little past 1/2 inch."   Is that one tick mark or two? 

Sizing accuracy is very important to get the correct boot for your horse the first time.   If you do need to return something in exchange for a different size, review our warranty information first.  Returning your boots and waiting on the exchange can be frustrating and you can lose valuable riding time.   

For review: on the English ruler, the marks are in increments of 1/16th of an inch.  Just for ease and future reference, here are the fractions  (which are the same used on our sizing charts) 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16 and 1.

Still need help with determining which size boot, use our calculator.  Remember to refer to an actual sizing chart and use it as the last word in deciding which size boots to choose for your horse.  The calculator is only a guide and is not as accurate as the written size charts are.  Measure, size and order, it is just these 3 easy steps from EasyCare!!!!

STUDS FOR ICE

Question: I ride through lots of wet grass and muddy conditions, ice at times and we have done quite a bit of slipping around from time to time using our Easyboots.  I understand you sell an easy to apply metal piece for the hoof boots.  Can you give me more information?

Answer: Yes, we have the EasyCare Ice Studs , for these types of conditions, which have proven to be a great accessory not only to the Easyboot but to all of our hoof care boots.  The long wearing studs can be easily attached to any hoof boot.  They can be removed when not needed, a flat pad could be used to cover the holes, or the small hole they leave in the boot, we've been told, serves as good drainage for the boot.  The stud is made of steel with a carbide tip and holds up through many miles of riding.  They are packaged in sets of 4 per boot.  Although they work great in the above mentioned conditions, we do not recommend the use of the studs in snow for the simple reason that you cannot see what is below the snow and you would not want to step on anything that could cause slipping. Check out these Stirrups!!!

The E-Z Ride Stirrups are available in Aluminum or Nylon, but both are still lightweight.  Each stirrup was weighed without the top bar attached and without a Nylon Safety Cage.  Each weight given below is per stirrup not per pair.

• Standard Aluminum weighs 12.6oz.
• Standard Nylon weighs 10.3oz.
• Standard Leather Covered weighs 1lb 2.3oz.
• Aluminum Tapadero weighs 1lb 13oz.
• Nylon Tapadero weighs 1lb 12.5oz.

If you have the cage attached, add an additional 2.1 oz to your stirrup weight.  Also take into account your top bar.

The heaviest top bar is a 3inch top bar at a weight of 3oz.

Some other additional information that you may find helpful.  The area for your foot, between the bottom of the top bar to the top of the pad is 4 3/4".  They are 5" wide from side-to-side and 4" deep from toe-to-heel.  This is standard for both Aluminum and Nylon.

The Easyboot Grip received a thorough test recently at the Grand Canyon XP ride where the footing became slick and unpredictable very quickly.  On the first day of this five day ride it poured rain so hard that horses, riders, and the ground beneath them became completely saturated.

Extreme conditions continued when later in the week it began to snow and temperatures dropped well below freezing.  Endurance riders using the boots reported a solid ride and said their horses strode out confidently with the Easyboot Grips in the mud, snow, puddles, and wet grass.

 

The Boot for Soaking/Medicating

The EasySoaker boot is a very handy product to have for various medicating or soaking needs.  The sturdy construction makes it the boot that will be usable time and again.  There may be various needs for medicating and EasySoaker is the perfect product to use.  We have a downloadable brochure that has lots of valuable information for you to determine your needs of application.

EasySoakers are useful for water soaking to soften the hoof before the visit from your natural hoof trimmer to make their job a bit easier (if you live in a dry climate).  Horses in their natural state, when drinking from a stream, lake or pond, will soak their hooves also.  They are actually "easy soakin!"

EasyCare recommends sizing up when purchasing an EasySoaker.  Sizing up one to two sizes allows extra space for bandages and liquids to be used inside the boot.  In addition, a larger size makes application and removal quicker and easier.  When soaking is needed, you really want the water or medicine to stay in the boot, not on the ground, so the fact that the EasySoakers come above the coronary band area is great!  The EasySoaker is better than a bucket...it will end the soaking frustration...no tipping over and loosing all of your liquids.  You can also have grooming time or just plain relaxing time with your horse while getting the soaking or medicating need accomplished.

Boa Boot Cap Covers

Question: Hi, I recently ordered a pair of Boa Boots.  I am somewhat pleased with them; however I've only put them on my horse for one ride and both caps were lost during the ride.  Either I totally misunderstood how to screw on the caps or they are defective.  It shouldn't be that hard! I also could not find any instructions on your EasyCare website.  Can you please help me out here, as I cannot use the boots without the caps, as it specifically states that the boots are not to be used without caps.  HELP and thanks for your assistance in this matter.

Answer: You are right it is not hard to install the caps, but with a few tips you will be riding in no time!  The real trick is to make sure the Boa letters are perpendicular when you place the cap on the dial, as you twist the cap you will hear several clicks, once you see the Boa letters being read straight across you are home free!  Happy Riding!

Boots to the Rescue for "Black"

We adopted a beautiful black standardbred a couple of years ago.  He was raced for the first half of his life as a pacer in Vancouver, B.C.  He's had a few injuries in his day and hard beginning as a racehorse.  Consequently, when we got him his feet were contracted from having plates and shoes all his life and bucked when he was asked to do too much...a prince in every other way .  First thing we did, was get rid of the shoes, start with a natural hoof trimming regime and let him play in the field to learn to be a horse again.  There was lots of limping and leg pain for the first little while, but the feet slowly started to harden up. 

My husband, who is an RCMP Officer and "Black" the standardbred began to bond.  Black would follow him around the yard with his nose on my husbands' shoulder.  My husband could not ride a horse.  This horse begged my husband to get on him.  So he did.  However, my husband could not stay on him.  He was constantly falling off.  Black would just stand there with the saddle sometimes under his belly and wait for my husband to collect himself and get back on.  It was really quite funny because a standardbred paces sometimes and their trot is huge.  For a novice rider, this is a big challenge but then again, a novice doesn't know any differently either.  This miserable, bucking racehorse would actually take care of my husband.  If an experienced rider got on him, he would buck.  If a child or my husband got on him, he was wonderful.

But, Black would not walk down the middle of a path, he was always walking off to the side with sore feet. Everyone told us to put shoes on him but I refused to hurt this horse any more than he'd already been hurt.  So, I got him some Old Macs from EasyCare.

The first time I put them on Black he lifted his feet so high; it was funny.   

My husband rides Black in the local parade (can you believe it, a green rider on an ex-race horse down the middle of town) with the tack we borrowed from the RCMP headquarters.  You will notice this RCMP "WANNABE" horse walking in the parade proudly sporting his OLD MAC's down the main street.  In this town of Quesnel, B.C. it is mostly cowboys, not too many people use the OLD MAC's.  The comments from the towns people were "look at that horse with his Nike's on."  There were lots of comments and lots of questions about those OLD MAC boots which was really a conversation opener for my husband and his PR duties.

Most importantly, Black's hoofs are doing great, no contraction and no pain.  I did natural hoof trimming on him from the moment I got him and together with the OLD MAC's  you would never know that those were racing feet any longer.  It took about 2 years to get his feet in shape but the OLD MAC's allowed us to be able to ride him while they were healing.  We use them on all four feet.  The only time of year I don't use them in is the winter when it is too cold for riding.

I have another horse I use in dressage and jumping.  I got him a pair of OLD MAC's for his front feet while we are trail riding.  When I saw the benefit of the boots on my standardbred I figured this was a good way to avoid stone bruising and to keep his feet in tip top shape for competition.    

PS:  I use the pastern wraps on both horses.  The Black doesn't really need them but I use them just in case. The competition horse gets sore without them.

Question: I would like information on your Stowaway Pommel Packs.  I understand you have two types.  Could you please provide me with the pocket measurement of both packs, and also does your company carry a special type of boot used for medicinal purposes?

Answer: Our Stowaway Pommel Packs are available in two styles at EasyCare.  The side pocket  measurement of the regular pommel is 6"W x 4"D x 8"H,  the top pocket 7"W x 4"D x 5"H.  The side pocket of the deluxe pommel is 5"W x 3"D  x 8"H, the top pocket  6"W x 7" x 3"H.   The Soaker Boot is perfect for a variety of applications where treatment of the hoof is required.  Soaking and poulticing, conditioning, providing a clean protected environment, holding medication at wound site, weight transfer (heel or toe) and reducing concussion.  The boot is available in sizes small through XXX Large.
