EasyCare Testimonial - Comfort Pads

EasyCare Dealer Attends Hoof Care Clinic

EasyCare Hoof Care Practitioner Dealer Tracy Browne writes in her blog what she learned from Dr. Bowker and Pete Ramey's Clinic last week in San Diego Nov 10 - Nov 13

Soundness is dependent on the development of the inner structures in the back part of the hoof, digital cushion and the lateral cartilage.

We must develop the inner structures of the hoof, like the digital cushion and lateral cartilages, over time by growing in a better hoof from the coronet band down by:

1. Lots of movement with a correct heel first landing (Paddock Paradise - no stalling!)
2. Pea Gravel - 4" placed everywhere we can in the horse's environment - this is very important
3. Ride with boots with FOAM PADS. Do not periphally load your horse (shoes, or a hoof in a boot without a pad). The dome pads work great for this.
4. Get rid of all signs of thrush - 50% Neosporin 50% Athlete's Foot Creme
5. Nutrition - grass hay and balanced minerals - low sugar and low starch

When trimming the horse:
1. It is about growing in a healthier hoof from the coronet band down. I can not affect what is already there, but I can grow in a better hoof.
2. Trimming from the top is cosmetic 90% of the time.
3. Place the mustang roll bevel underneath the hoof, and just lightly finishing from the top - I want a thick hoof wall and too much rasping from the top is counterproductive.
4. Long toes are very common in domestic horses and affects optimal movement. Work on taking toes back by setting breakover and bevel from under the hoof.

Oh, I learned so much, but these were the biggies. I am really going to be looking at hooves with new eyes, with the focus being on what is happening on the inside and how the horse's hooves are adapting to other influences in the body (saddle fit, injury, imbalances).

Radiographs really help with figuring out what is going on internally and I encourage all horse owners to ask their vet to take a set of lateral radiographs if you are specifically concerned about long toes or hoof development.

Once Again ... Those Wonderful Epics!

Soon after I purchased Miss Bear Cat (Kitty) 10 years ago as a Western Pleasure Show horse, she was diagnosed as having navicular syndrome, though x-rays showed no real damage. We went through all the typical pads, egg bars, but nothing seemed to change things much.

In time Kitty became my trail horse and we enjoyed our Sunday morning rides within the limits of her ability. She would weave left and right down hills, tread cautiously and slowly on hard ground. Eventually she would not stand to be shod in the back because of the difficulty bearing the weight on the front during the process. So Kitty became barefooted in the rear using Easyboots for trail riding.

I found great interest in reading the stories of barefoot horses and navicular syndrome on the EasyCare website and decided a few months ago to give Kitty one last chance to heal naturally. It has only been three months but Kitty has almost fully recovered. She stands squarely, does not point and will allow all of her legs to be held and trimmed. In her Easyboot Epics front and rear, we are off every week for a fast paced trail ride outpacing the horses she always trailed behind.

I truly believe that she is passed any problem she has had and I know we will be back at the shows this fall. Thank you Easyboots.  Seeing her in no pain was worth all of the effort!

Bernie Harberts' Tips for using Easyboots on a Mule

Just in case you have forgotten:  Bernie is traveling from Canada to Mexico via Mule Wagon.  His Mule "Polly" is Barefoot and uses Easyboots during her travels. 

Bernie has posted on his website, www.riverearth.com, some tips on how he keeps Easyboots on Polly's feet.   Below is a brief excerpt from his website including his own pictures. 

Mules have narrower hooves than horses. You could describe a horse's hoof as "C" shaped whereas a mule's hoof is "U" shaped.  That means the rubber hoof boots, because they're designed for horses, tend to fall off a mule's feet.  To adapt the Easyboot (my brand of choice), I made shims that screwed into the inside of the boot.   

Step 1) Round up a 2-degree rubber wedge pad (found at the local farrier's supply). Lay it next to the boot's flat side and trace out the boot shape. Make sure the fat part of the wedge pad is at the top. This makes the shim grip better, like the tapered collar on a drill chuck.
Step 2)Cut out the wedge. Drill holes to match the existing boot hardware.
Step 3)Using the screws and hardware found on your EasyBoot, screw the shims to the inside of the boot. You can use the existing hardware, though you'll have to use longer machine screws. You can purchase them at your local hardware store. Remember to use stainless steel.
