The Horse's Hoof Magazine has released its Fall/Winter 2007 Issue 29. The cover story was dedicated to the Barefoot Police Horse from Houston and written by Greg Sokoloski (Police Officer, City of Houston, Texas)
This is the 3rd article regarding this mounted Unit (see THH issues 18 and 20) and their transition from metal shoes three years ago (one horse was barefoot and 29 had metal shoes) to their now 29 barefoot police horses and 7 still in metal shoes. The Old Mac's, Old Mac G2's and the Boas are only used when they are deemed necessary but the majority of the time these horses are barefoot.
Their terrain includes but is not limited to gravel, concrete, wooden bridges, stairs, asphalt roads and where ever else they need to be. This is done 6 hours a day, 5 days a week and have better traction. They prove everyday that a barefoot horse is comfortable, capable and will not wear his hooves down.
