Amiee and Pi Love Their EasyCare Hoof Boots!

Derby July 19 09 018 (Medium) Pi (13 year old Appendix) has been barefoot for about 5 years now and he loves his Easyboots!  We've been using Bares since we initially pulled his shoes and he hacks out on the trails like a champ... whether it's on the rocky trails around us in Massachusetts or climbing the forever up-and-down beautiful hills of Vermont or moving right along on a hunter pace.  We are often asked by other riders what his boots are for, and my answer is often quickly followed up with, 'Isn't he too big to go barefoot?'  Pi doesn't think so!

Lately we've been doing a lot more jumping and with all the rain in the Northeast this Spring, I realized Pi would benefit from a bit more traction, especially when we're soaring over fences in a field.  I decided to try the Grips and we haven't looked back!  They grab the ground and provide us with a secure landing without sticking too much -- and Pi loves them.

Thanks for helping us keep on jumping barefoot -- despite the weather!

Jumping in Easyboot Grips

IMG_2122_edited  Trudi Vellacott of Calgary Canada is loving her Easyboot Grips!

"Here is a picture of our show jumper in his Easyboot Grips.  He is a rehab that we are working on bringing sound again.  This is his first show with his Easyboots on.  It went very well, even encountered some rain and mud.  Not so much as a slip.  We will be getting a pair for our other jumper," says Trudi.

Thanks for sharing your photo and successful experience using the Easyboot Grip Trudi!

Boa's and Epics..Making Magic's Life Easier

Magic1                            I bought Magic (a Tennessee Walker) in May 2007 as a "shod" 12 year old horse.  In the fall of 2007 I decided to try  my shot at transitioning him to become barefoot.  At first I just rode him barefoot on softer trails, avoiding the rockier locations.  Since that was limiting, I began with the Easyboots in the spring of 2008.  I quickly fell in love with the boots.  I could ride ANYWHERE and still have a barefoot horse.  I started with the Boa boots because I was chicken that I couldn't manage the Epics...used the Boas till end of summer 2007, then got brave and tried the Epics.....love them all!  Now after a full year of first Boas, then Epics, Magic has become tougher and I can ride him barefoot on many trails in my area.  Knowing I can slip the boots on whenever in doubt, makes this ongoing process a breeze.

Magic3

Magicboa2

I now have a pair of Easyboot Grips also, which I love in this muddy spring riding season. Whether downhill, uphill or just plain sloshing through a mucky section, the Grips just hang in there, giving Magic firm footing and me peace of mind.  It's unbelievable to see that none of these boots have ever come off.  Some rides we have been through so much mud, I can't even see the boots!!  After digging the mud off, there they are!

Magicboa1

I am now working on riding Magic barefoot, even more frequently, entering into our second year without shoes.  Thank you so much EasyCare for a great product and the services you offer!!  Recently I sent an Epic in to have a new cable put on.  In less than a week, I received the repaired boot!  I am planning on graduating to the new Easyboot Gloves..whenever my Epics wear out.  Might be awhile though, because these are TOUGH boots!  I guess that's the price you pay for making a durable product.

Gloves and Grips Working Together

Take a look at these great shots of the Glove Boots in Action. These words and pictures come from Ann Szolas (Barefoot HoofCare) and her horse Cory wearing Grip Boots in the front and Gloves in the back. It really was impressive to Ann to see that they stayed on his super narrow hind feet, the  boots were great through the whole ride!

I love those Gloves!  I can't believe how great they stay on in all kinds of awful stuff.  I have raced, crossed a river with a sinky bottom, scrambled out of the same river up a 3 foot vertical silty climb, sunk halfway to his hocks in soft dirt with roots in it, gone through mud and just plain really rough trails.  I have never lost one and only had one get a little twisted once.  I do get mud shoved under one side of the "V" sometimes but it is no trouble.  I LOVE the traction!  It's almost as good as new Grips which I have been using on the fronts.  Can't wait to get my Edges for the fronts! Thank You Ann, EasyCare  thanks you for your great feedback! Happy Trails!

Several Tips for Your Barefoot Transition

Most newly de-shod horses do fine in a pasture, arena, and on soft trails. How well they handle challenging footing, and how long it takes them to be comfortable on moderately challenging surfaces, depends on their feet, general health, living environment, diet, exercise level, the terrain you ride on, the competence of your trimmer, and the regularity of the trims.

People who choose to take their horses barefoot tend to be proactive about their long term health and welfare and to form interactive, supportive online communities that share a wealth of information. Horses getting good low carb diets, living on challenging terrain, and getting lots of exercise, usually do fine barefoot on all types of terrain year round.

Linda Cowles, wrote a great article in "Equine Wellness" magazine that is excellent to review and learn several good tips.

There are four things to incorporate into a successful transition:

1. Boots and pads......boots give horses the advantages of metal shoes without the concussion, nail holes and peripheral loading, while allowing them to continue normal work. Boots can be padded with cushioned insoles that encourage the horse to use his feet correctly and athletically, thereby accelerating redevelopment of internal hoof structure. This correct heel-first landing movement results in stronger, straighter and wider heels, and the increased blood flow builds tougher, stronger feet.

EasyCare has a complete line of various styles to accomodate many hoof sizes, such as Epics, Bares, Grips, Easyboots,Boa's , Old Mac Originals and G-2's.

2. The correct trim.....Getting the horse transitioned is easier when you have an experienced barefoot hoofcare provider and the trimming is done on a consistent timely schedule.

3.  The right diet......all that most horses need to perform athletically are:

               a. Balanced nutrients

               b. Good water

               c. Good low NSC (non structural arbohydrate) grass hay

               d. Low NSC pature for movement

4.  Get rid of the hoof infections.......most people don't recognize the signs of thrush, and few people appreciate how painful it can be. A successful transition depends on eliminating frog infections.

Going barefoot can require a leap of faith, and the initial results may be alarming  for some riders. Keep an open mind, think positive, and expect great things from your horse's transition.

Winter Hoof Care

SnowYes, that time of the year has already shown itself and is approaching upon us. Whatever your current temperature is, you still need to look ahead to "Winter Hoof Care".

The November 2008 edition of Horse Illustrated has an article by Nancy S. Loving, DVM, on how to "Winterize Your Horse". Part of this article is in regards to winter hoof care.Snow1

The article indicates that it is beneficial to let your horse go barefoot for at least a couple of months during the year, and winter is the time to do this. Also, barefoot reduces hazards like balling of the snow, since the hoof is better able to shed ice and snow.

Horses that have been barefoot or only barefoot for the winter will still need a regular trim. A visit from your hoof care practitioner every six to eight weeks will keep the hooves ready for spring riding.

She even recommends hoof boots for winter riding. "If you still plan on riding during the winter, consider a hoof boot rather than leaving the shoes on".   The Easyboot Grip is specifically designed for use in the snow. Winter… snowballs and ice are great for sport… except when they’re under your horse’s feet! Even the Boa Horse Boot’s polyurethane surface eliminates snow balling up on the bottom of the boot as it would on the sole of a horse wearing standard shoes. In fact, any of EasyCare's hoof boots would eliminate snow balling.

StudsEasyCare Inc has optional titanium-coated boot studs for gripping sheet ice. Long wearing studs (4 per boot) can be easily attached to any Boa Horse Boot, Old Mac's, Old Mac's G2, Easyboot Bare and up to a size four in our Easyboot and Easyboot Epics to provide traction on asphalt, ice or other hard or slippery surfaces. The studs may be removed when their application is no longer necessary, and replaced as needed. Larger studs are now available for the Easyboot and Easyboot Epic from size five and up.

Dr. Loving also says studs can be used in shoes just like on the boots. While traction is extremely important, very aggressive traction can inhibit a horse’s natural way of going and can increase stress on joints, tendons and upper extremities. The ground may not always be slippery, so your horse's foot may "stick" with a traction device, resulting in injury. This kind of injury happens suddenly and you may not even realize it until lameness becomes apparent.Snow2

This is just one of the things you need to get done to "winterize your horse" per Nancy Loving, DVM. Hooves are part of the winter care for your horse, but you need to read the rest of the article for the rest of the story. Also, while you are out riding the trails, don’t be surprised if you see a new kind of hoofprint in the snow. Look at it carefully; you may be the first in the group to identify the elusive EasyCare's Easyboot Grip print.

Barefoot Vs. Shod

Throughout the years of the ongoing points and counter points of shoeing vs. barefoot, we continue to support the pro's and con's of each side. The most important thing to remember is, what is right for one horse may not be the very best for another. One of the most interesting articles on this subject is found in the August 2008 issue of  "The Horse Magazine". The article was written by Marcia King, an award winning -freelance writer, who specializes in equine, canine, and feline veterinary topics. She's schooled in hunt seat, dressage, and Western pleasure.

Present at the seminar held for farriers and veterinarians were Robert Cook, FRCVS, PhD, Professor of Surgery Emeritus at Tuft University and developer of the Bitless Bridle, and Patrick Reilly, Chief of Farrier Services at New Bolton Center. Patrick is researching on the development of a protocol for the use of an in-shoe force measuring system.  These two gentlemen went head to head with questions from "The Horse". In many cases they agreed. For instance,  when it comes to certain disciplines, terrain, climate or horsekeeping conditions, or whether a horse should be shod or unshod can be influenced either way. Many horses live comfortably without shoes no matter what the environment or use is. The structure of the horse's hoof is a result of all of the environmental factors.

As discussed, a barefoot program is not just about trimming, it is a total management program. A horse owner takes on responsibility to provide and manage conditions that are not harmful to his horse.  During the transition period hoof boots can be worn to protect the hoof and to prevent excessive wear of a hoof with poor horn growth that has not completely recovered from having been shod.  EasyCare can provide seven different models, the Easyboot, Epic, Bare, Grip,  Old Mac Original, Old Mac G2 and Boa Boot.

Also mentioned in the article is the study and continuous research of Dr. Robert J. Bowker who believes that barefoot conditions are better and that one can have the same effects of a shoe in barefooted conditions, dependent on how the hoof is trimmed. If you remove plenty of sole and cut back the bars, trim the frog then you have acquired a peripherally loaded foot that is similar to a shod horse.

It is an excellent article you shouldn't miss reading. Happy Trails from EasyCare!

A Helpful Tip From Our Warehouse

Velcro_cleaner2Have you ever gotten back from a ride, removed the boots and wondered how to clean the Velcro? Our warehouse personnel have been using a simple cat brush (their own Velcro Cleaner) on the Velcro to remove grass, hair and whatever else is stuck. They use it on both the hook and loop sides of the Velcro. This can also rejuvenate that loop side as well.

If you have seeds or small sticks still stuck in the Velcro, try using a steel brush. A little metal brush just a bit bigger than your toothbrush works wonders as well.

So go to your local pet shop and pick up your cat brush to clean your Velcro.  Icebootscolors You can use it on the gaiter for the Easyboot Epic, Easyboot Bare, and Easyboot Grip. The best one to use it on however, is the Old Mac or Old Mac G2. Don't forget that the Ice Boots and the Stowaways also have Velcro and this helpful tip can be used on them as well.

Easyboots and Grips for Fizzer and Red

Fizz_saso_4_08_2

A great testimonial for EasyCare's Grips and Easyboots for you to enjoy reading about.

I recently started my two 5 year old Tennessee Walking horses in Limited Distance rides this spring, barefoot booted.

Fizzer is my own breeding, a filly born to a goofy old mare on a steep, rocky, hillside in Mendocino. She has grown up to be a large 16.1 hands, raw boned mare who moves very quickly, with lots of spooking,  high action, and fast acceleration/deceleration and direction changes. At vet checks, the vets are agape , as she 'racks out', dragging me along behind her. They ask me if she can do that for speed for 30 miles. I smile and tell them she is a rocket ride. When they ask me about the Easyboots I tell them she has never had shoes. They are amazed.

And she never threw a Grip on her first 25 miler, and she finished in just over 3 hours. I think the traction of the Grips gave her the confidence to go very fast over the muddy steep rocky unsure footing of that ride. She loves to gallop downhill, and she never took a mis-step.(I put a handle on my saddle, I pretty much just hang on.)

Red_saso_08_2_2

Red is an 1100 pound stallion I have raised from a baby.  He has never had metal shoes either. He is 15.1 hands, built like a tank, and wears size 3 easyboot (with dome pads). His first 25 miler was in the heat in the coastal mountains of California. We slid down steep, rocky jeep roads, stepped into the muddy spring grass to graze, and waded knee-deep (he loves that) into cattle-seasoned sucking-mud stock ponds to drink, and he never lost a boot.

We put some wear on those puppies, but they never came off. In fact, for the last vet check, I took off all four boots and trotted out that way.  Not an ounce of lameness and we passed vet with flying colors.

Is "Barefoot" an Option for your Draft Horse?

BarePete Ramey has another article regarding the Barefoot Horse, but this time he addresses the Draft Horse.

EasybootWe created the heavy draft horse through breeding.  We didn't Epic_2manage to scale everything up proportionately, though.  While overgrown walls can usually lift the soles and frogs off the ground, they are rarely proportionately strong enough in a draft. --Pete Ramey.

Many people have decided draft horses are supposed to have flared, split hoof walls. But the hoof walls were never intended to bear all the weight, so when you try to force the walls into a primary support role, this is when flared and split hoof walls start. Taking the draft into the barefoot stage can put a stop to the "expected" condition of the draft horse.

He also found that draft horses 1) Take to being barefoot easier and 2) benefit from it more that the smaller breeds.  Because of this, Pete has found that he can pull the boots, do a natural trim, and return the horse to work. If the horse is not 8_boa_horse_boot_1"comfortable" returning to work, Pete suggests hoof boots .  He uses the Easyboot Epic, which is available up to size 7 and can be used during the transition period.  (His article does indicate a size 8 Epic but that information is not correct.)

The Boa Boots, Easyboots, Easyboot Epics and Easyboot Bares can accommodate large draft horses.  The largest boots we currently make are the Easyboot, Easyboot Epic and Easyboot Bare in a size 7.  All three of these boots will fit a foot up to 7 9/16 inches wide and 7 3/4 inches long.   Here is a picture of one of the guys in the warehouse wearing a size 8 Boa Boot.  This  boot is slightly smaller than the size 7 Easyboot, Epic or Bare.

Learn more by reading this article on Pete's web site, http://www.hoofrehab.com/draft.htm , or you can just visit his site to see what other educational material he has available.   www.hoofrehab.com

Essentials To Keep a Barefoot Riding Horse

Throughout their history of domestication, horses have been maintained and ridden barefoot successfully. In the United States, only in the past couple of decades, after studies were done of the feet of free-roaming horses in the Western states and theories tested, has the idea of barefoot horses been the subject of much discussion. Tim Ware, author of "Maintaining a Natural Horse", brings to light a complete program for keeping a natural horse, barefoot and rideable. In this book, all aspects of horse care are covered: diet, exercise, living arrangements, trimming and shoeing, choosing the right horse, and emotional wellness.

There is much discussion on respecting nature and the natural processes that take place. Some of which man tries to change because of the emotions at the moment and then realizes that he/she may have gone against nature and interrupted situations that nature would have taken care of her way. Nature can be harsh at times, but it seems to operate with the perspective of what's best for the long run.

He discusses how important the terrain that a horse lives on is to the overall condition of their hooves. Most of our barefoot studies have been publicized  from expeditions in the Western US. He tells of his studies of the Shackleford Island wild horses, living off the coast of North Carolina, and how the wet conditions have demanded a much different looking hoof on the barefoot residents inhabiting the island. They were believed to be the descendants of horses that survived a Spanish ship wreck around 1520. How the hooves adapt and have certain qualities unlike the Western wild horses, is very interesting. He summarizes his ideas of why the hooves have developed like they are and how that has helped the horse survive such wet conditions.

He also discusses the need for hoof boots when riding on terrain that is different than what the horse has been raised in. Boots are also needed in the transition period from shoes to barefoot. He mentions his boots of choice and one is the EasyCare Boa boot.  It is really stressed at the importance of providing your riding partner the comfort of boots if needed. EasyCare has a wide selection of hoof boots for barefoot horses. These include Easyboots, Easyboot Epic, Easyboot Bare, Easyboot Grip, Boa boot, Old Macs and Easy Soaker boots.

The importance of a proper natural diet and lots of exercise is highly stressed. There is description of living conditions that can be accomplished to facilitate lots of movement, even if your space is somewhat limited in size.

The emotional well being of the domesticated horse is often forgotten. Even though man does not think of the horse as having a need such as that, they require it and will be a better partner for it.

One of the chapters is describing the barefoot trim. The how-to's and the why's give a bit of information to even the owner so that they can be aware of what to look for. Trimming as close to the natural state as possible is the most beneficial.

This is a great source for a quick read on some basics of keeping your horse in a natural barefoot life style. Click here to read more about these publications and to see what else the author has to offer.

EasyCare Grip Customer Testimonial

Nancyreed2 My young mare and I competed and completed a Limited Distance ride last weekend.  It was a first in many ways.  She is my first bred foal from my first stallion.  It was her first endurance ride, and it was our first race ever on Easyboot Grips.  I had tried the Grips on her only the Thursday before for just 1/2 mile and she moved freely and easily in the mud.

It rained all Friday night; I know, I was sleeping in the back of my car.  So at 5 a.m. I got up and switched the Epics to the Grips and saddled up in drizzle, wearing two sets of rain pants and two coats.   We were greeted on our early morning start with another half hour of rain, then later a half hour of  hail.  The roads and trails were completely soaked, and I have to say she did not lose footing once nor did they come loose or unbuckled ever.  And we went fast!  I was surprised how fast she was able to stay in control on the steep, muddy roads.  So fast in fact, we top fived in a field of 31.

Thank you Fizzer Girl and thank you Easyboot Grips for a great ride!

Easyboot Grips and Easyboots handle both Snow and Ice

EasyCare Dealer, Jenny Bertrum owner of Cheyrock Tack in Benson, VT hasn't let a Mirabellalittle snow or ice stop her from enjoying the Vermont weather.  Jenny recently sent this great picture of her mare, Mirabella, to us with a brief testimony.

Here is a photo of my eight-year old 1/2 Trakehner mare wearing her Easyboots with studs in the front and Grips with studs in the back. We have done 12-mile drives, at about 8 mph, every weekend for the last three weeks with no Studs problems with twisting or coming off without the gaiters. I am thrilled, to say the least. I know the picture isn't calendar worthy, but thought you might like it anyway.  Jenny

Jenny has had no problems with her boots twisting or coming off.  Sizing your boots correctly is one way to be assured that you have no issues with lost boots or rubbing.   Be sure to take your measurements directly after a fresh trim.

We also enjoy hearing from both our dealers and our customers.  Submit your testimonial for a chance to win a pair of Epics.  You can also have the opportunity to submit your picture for our 2009 calendar.

EasyCare New Improved Gaiter for Epic, Grip & Bare!

Epic_and_bare_gaiter_002 EasyCare is excited to announce that after months of R&D and many miles of testing, a new and improved gaiter will be shipping on all Epic, Bare, Grip and Custom Easyboots starting in February 2008.

The new gaiter has four major revisions:

1. There is no internal stitching.  All stitching on the inside of the gaiter has been removed making a softer and less abrasive surface for the horse.

2. All edges of the gaiter are now rolled, top, bottom and sides.

3. The leather on the back of the gaiter has been replaced with a two-way elastic.  This two-way elastic stretches and gives to accomodate different heel builds.

4. The elastic at the back of the gaiter also makes each boot much easier to apply.  The gaiter can now be folded back over the boot so it is out of the way during application.

If you have any questions about the new improved gaiter, please contact the EasyCare Customer Help desk by clicking here.

Safety Alert – Dealing with Icy Footing

The United States Eventing Association recently printed this article about icy footing and how to best avoid injuries to both yourself and your Gripsequine friend.  One of the quotes from this article:  "Hoof boots often aren't as slippery on snow (and prevent snow packing)" is one true statement.  The Easyboot Grip would be one of those boots with it's aggressive traction that would help in the snow and prevent snow packing.  As you can see from these pictures,  there is no snow balled up in the Easyboot Grip tread.  These boots are great for snow, wet grass and muddy conditions.  Also since they are the special for the month of January, you may want to test them out for yourself.

We can also help with the ice issue as well.  The article from the USEA also indicates that studs are great for gripping on ice.  Our studs can be used on most of our boots.   We even have some great educational videos on how to properly drill for the studs (part 1) and application of the studs (part 2).

To prevent injury to yourself or your horse, you may want to read the article and check out the options EasyCare has available for you.
