Hoof Boots and Georgie Girl

Here's a picture of me on my Missouri Foxtrotter gaited horse (I'm the one in the back with a helmet) at big Creek Trail Ride in Hartshorn, Missouri. The lady on the paint Foxtrotter is my riding buddy. She uses Easyboots for spare tires when she looses a shoe.

Doretta%20n%20Candy[1]

My horse, Georgie Girl, is a coming 9 year old Black Missouri Foxtrotter that I have had since she was 4. I bought her from Valley Springs Foxtrotter Ranch in Black, Missouri.

Georgie Girl was always very sensitive to rocks, even in shoes. One day I was looking at my riding buddy's horses hooves and then Georgie's, and noticed that Georgie had big slits in her frog and in to the bulb area. I started researching it on the internet and found several barefoot horse sites that talked about it being caused from thrush and the only way to get it healed was to remove the shoes. I had been trying with no success for a year with shoes on Georgie.  After my last camping ride in 2005, I had Georgie's shoes pulled. I worked for the next 3 years, trying everything to get those big slits healed. Finally, I was told about Clean Trax  deep hoof cleanser soak to heal the Thrush and White Line disease. I had one Easy Soaker boot from Easycare that I used to do each foot one at a time. After that ordeal, I bought more and soaked them all at one time and finally got the hooves to heal. Hallelujah!

During the time after I had Georgie's shoes pulled, I began the journey of learning how to measure, order and use Easyboots. I have tried them all. I now use Easyboot Bare's on the front and Easyboot Epic's on the back. But, next time I have my horse trimmed, I'm going to measure for the Easyboot Glove. It's been a learning process and at times, an expensive proposition. I tried other brands of boots along the way, and they either didn't hold up or caused Georgie to have swollen legs at the end of the ride. One of the other brands wore through after only 3 hours on the Missouri rock. Thus, I have found the Easyboot Bare's to work best for my gaited horse. I do struggle at times to get them on but ONLY when I don't put them in the sun to warm or put them in hot water. One of the lessons I had to learn along the way.

Along my journey, I even learned to perform the natural trim on my Georgie, but I still do have a trimmer that I use. When Georgie gets her fresh spring trim,I hope to measure her for the Easyboot Glove. I love your products! Keep up the innovative work! I can't wait to see how Georgie does with the Easyboot Gloves! By the way, Georgie gaits better than ever now that her feet are healed!

Hooves in Moist Climates = Special Challenges

In dry climates, hoof wall fungus is somewhat rare. It ususally will happen when the paddock gets flooded, the horse prefers to stand in the manure and urine pile, or when the stalls aren't kept clean. You can fix the problems by exposing the fungus to air and they will usually go away.

In moist climates, this problem can be a never ending cycle. Dawn Jenkins, a barefoot trimmer and therapeutic shoeing practitioner, works in both Southern California and Hawaii and encounters such issues. She wrote a great article that appeared in the Holistic Horse magazine, issue Oct/Nov 2008.

In this article, she discusses ways to prevent and treat hoof fungal problems in moister climates. She also mentions some facts and poses the question....Could there be a difference in the individual immune system, not just the environment?

Read this article for some really good information and education that makes quite a bit of sense. She also gives some natural remedies and general instructions for helping to eliminate some of the fungal problems that your horse may experience at the wetter times of the year. Some of the natural fixes could certainly incorporate hoof boots and soaker boots. EasyCare has many boot styles such as, Easyboots, Epics, Bares, Old Mac and Boas,  to help you keep your hooves clean and dry during the moister times. We have the Soaker boots to use for soaking with the remedies that are mentioned. Especially the Apple Cider Vinegar and water mixture, which I know works as I use this soak for my horses occasionally.

Check out the Holistic Horse magazine for several great articles on horse care and holistic answers to some of your horse's needs.

Natural First Aid for the Horse and Rider

Kicks, bites, and injuries are an inevitable part of horse ownership. Arnica is one of the top "must have" herbs in any herbal first aid kit.

Arnica, a small daisy-like, yellow flower, is known by several common names including Mountain Tobacco, Wolfsbane and Lepordsbane. Arnica Montana is the variety most commonly used in America and in commercial perpetration. Arnica has long been used medicinally in America and Europe for injuries and traumas of all sorts, from shock to fractures. Arnica significantly reduces inflammation, prevents bruising, and speeds healing. Arnica is certainly a handy remedy to have in any stable!

Arnica excels in the treatment of bruises of all types. Just rub it on the affected area. For bruised soles add Arnica tincture to your soaking bucket or soak paper towels with arnica liniment for use inside hoof boots. EasySoaker boots would be the perfect soaking boot for this....better than a bucket, any day!

Tendon strains also respond well to Arnica soaked paper towels applied under wraps. Topical applications of Arnica cool down hot laminitic feet and soothe arthritic joints. Diluted with water, Arnica makes a revitalizing bath after workouts or long trail rides.

Never, never give your horse Arnica tincture by mouth. You can get many excellent preparations at your local health food or natural food stores.

Check out a recent article in Trail Blazer magazine, August 08 issue. Gloria Garland, the author of Equine Acupressure Therapeutics, gives a recipe for "make it yourself".

James has just released the first podcast for The Horse's Hoof. This is a FREE video. "The Horse's Hoof Trimcast" is an informational series intended to assist those already trimming their own horse's hooves. The first episode is a general introduction to how James trims. You can download this 1/2 hour long barefoot trimming video to your computer through iTunes, or you can just watch it online.

Go here and click on "THH Trimcast" and enjoy. There are several printouts that you can use for gauging trimming tasks also.

Yvonne and James have several books for sale at their site that may help with further trimming knowledge. They also offer several styles of EasyCare hoof boots for sale. You can select from Epics, Bares, Easyboots, Old Mac G-2's, Old Mac Originals , Soaker boots, Boa boots, and Comfort Pads, to name a few.

Essentials To Keep a Barefoot Riding Horse

Throughout their history of domestication, horses have been maintained and ridden barefoot successfully. In the United States, only in the past couple of decades, after studies were done of the feet of free-roaming horses in the Western states and theories tested, has the idea of barefoot horses been the subject of much discussion. Tim Ware, author of "Maintaining a Natural Horse", brings to light a complete program for keeping a natural horse, barefoot and rideable. In this book, all aspects of horse care are covered: diet, exercise, living arrangements, trimming and shoeing, choosing the right horse, and emotional wellness.

There is much discussion on respecting nature and the natural processes that take place. Some of which man tries to change because of the emotions at the moment and then realizes that he/she may have gone against nature and interrupted situations that nature would have taken care of her way. Nature can be harsh at times, but it seems to operate with the perspective of what's best for the long run.

He discusses how important the terrain that a horse lives on is to the overall condition of their hooves. Most of our barefoot studies have been publicized  from expeditions in the Western US. He tells of his studies of the Shackleford Island wild horses, living off the coast of North Carolina, and how the wet conditions have demanded a much different looking hoof on the barefoot residents inhabiting the island. They were believed to be the descendants of horses that survived a Spanish ship wreck around 1520. How the hooves adapt and have certain qualities unlike the Western wild horses, is very interesting. He summarizes his ideas of why the hooves have developed like they are and how that has helped the horse survive such wet conditions.

He also discusses the need for hoof boots when riding on terrain that is different than what the horse has been raised in. Boots are also needed in the transition period from shoes to barefoot. He mentions his boots of choice and one is the EasyCare Boa boot.  It is really stressed at the importance of providing your riding partner the comfort of boots if needed. EasyCare has a wide selection of hoof boots for barefoot horses. These include Easyboots, Easyboot Epic, Easyboot Bare, Easyboot Grip, Boa boot, Old Macs and Easy Soaker boots.

The importance of a proper natural diet and lots of exercise is highly stressed. There is description of living conditions that can be accomplished to facilitate lots of movement, even if your space is somewhat limited in size.

The emotional well being of the domesticated horse is often forgotten. Even though man does not think of the horse as having a need such as that, they require it and will be a better partner for it.

One of the chapters is describing the barefoot trim. The how-to's and the why's give a bit of information to even the owner so that they can be aware of what to look for. Trimming as close to the natural state as possible is the most beneficial.

This is a great source for a quick read on some basics of keeping your horse in a natural barefoot life style. Click here to read more about these publications and to see what else the author has to offer.

Conditioning the Barefoot Horse and Using Boots

Safrica_2Laura Seegers is an endurance barefoot rider from South Africa and has an interesting article regarding conditioning of the barefoot horse.  Her article "Some Broad guidelines to Conditioning the Barefoot Horse" gives you the following 9 basic guidelines:

Education--Be proactive in finding out all you can.  Want to read more,  EasyCare has some great educational articles as well.

Adaptation of your horse's lifestyle--Take them out of the stable and let them be horses.  Let them live outdoors with other horses.  You can also read this other article on "How to Create All-Terrain Barefeet".

Get personally involved with their hooves.  Get an expert barefoot trimmer.  You can find one with our Hoof Care Practitioner Search.

Watch what they eat--Keep it simple and plain.  Laminitis can be brought on by obesity.

Ride often--Frequent movement is vital for barefoot success.  Bare_2

Monitor hoof wear and adjust when needed--If you need to train hard or their hooves are getting too short, use hoof boots.  They have personally tested and recommend the Easyboot Bare.

Start slow and build up gradually--Don't be in a hurry to see results.  The hoof grows slowly.

Easysoaker Avoid oils and paints--Use water to moisturize the hoof.  The hoof gets hard slowly through conditioning.  Think of the money you will save on oils and paints if you just use the EasySoaker and water.

Keep photographic records--These are wonderful encouragements.  Sceptics will not take your word for how well the hooves are.

You need to read the whole article to get more out of the information it has.   Go to www.endurancehorse.co.za.

Should You Soak Your Horse's Feet Using the EasySoaker?

Using an EasyCare  Soaker Boot can help in many ways to improve the condition of your barefoot horse.  At HealthyHoof.com there is an interesting article that Linda Cowles wrote about hoof soaking techniques and why you should soak.

Easysoaker_3We have recently been posting interesting articles about going barefoot.  Two of the most recent ones are Why Barefoot? and Is Barefoot Better?  If you are thinking about transitioning to the barefoot, Linda also explains that the Soakers will help as well during the transition.

She indicates there are a lot of reasons for soaking such as abscesses, infections, thrush, etc and soaking does accelerate healing.  Also using plain water in your Soaker Boot prior to a trim can help your Hoof Care Practitioner expedite the trim.    Karen also uses the Soaker Boots on her horses prior to their trim and you can read her blog on Rock Hard Feet.

SoakingLinda also has some great tips in this article about soakers and baby diapers.  Baby Diapers you say?  Well, I am not going to reveal anything more so check out this article.  Then check out our EasySoaker boots and get the correct size for your horse.  Remember spring is coming and trims will be due soon.

EasySoakers for Abscesses

After just having gone through an abscess with one of my horses, I was looking for a way to keep her foot soaked and pliable so it could come out easier and quicker.

I tried soaking 3-4 times a day and tried many other soak boots. The best one was the Easy Soaker for various reasons.

It stayed on well, kept water/Epsom salt inside, and she has no problems moving about with it. It kept her hoof clean and kept the medication where I wanted it. There was no rubbing, nor any sore spots after it was taken off. It was easy on, easy off !

If you need to correct heel/toe position due to an injury or abscess site with padding, it would be very easy to do with this boot. It  allowed me to pad her foot so there was less concussion, keeping the padding in the right spot without having to wrap twice a day. I saved SO much time! They are also very easy to clean out, hose and let dry.

One of the best ways I have found to soak and treat any hoof issue.....use an EasySoaker boot.

"After just having gone through an Soakerdomepads abscess with one of my horses, I was looking for a way to keep her foot soaked and pliable so it (the abscess) could come out easier and quicker. I tried soaking 3-4 times a day and tried many other soak boots. The best one was the Easy Soaker for various reasons. It stayed on well, kept water/Epsom salt inside and she has no problems walking with it. I even turned her out overnight in them (that is not recommended, but I tried it to see how they would wear). Easysoaker Boot Promo

EasySoaker Promotion

Soakerdomepads We are starting a new promo with the EasySoaker boot.  Here is a link with more information, and here is the press release on it.  The dome pads are still being tested and we've received mostly positive feedback so far.  Some people have had trouble with the sizing since the pads have only been made in one size.  Once you trim them down so far, you lose the dome shape.  Others haven't been sure how to trim - I do it so that I keep the most concave part of the pad in the concave section of the horses hoof.

The Boot for Soaking/Medicating

The EasySoaker boot is a very handy product to have for various medicating or soaking needs.  The sturdy construction makes it the boot that will be usable time and again.  There may be various needs for medicating and EasySoaker is the perfect product to use.  We have a downloadable brochure that has lots of valuable information for you to determine your needs of application.

EasySoakers are useful for water soaking to soften the hoof before the visit from your natural hoof trimmer to make their job a bit easier (if you live in a dry climate).  Horses in their natural state, when drinking from a stream, lake or pond, will soak their hooves also.  They are actually "easy soakin!"

EasyCare recommends sizing up when purchasing an EasySoaker.  Sizing up one to two sizes allows extra space for bandages and liquids to be used inside the boot.  In addition, a larger size makes application and removal quicker and easier.  When soaking is needed, you really want the water or medicine to stay in the boot, not on the ground, so the fact that the EasySoakers come above the coronary band area is great!  The EasySoaker is better than a bucket...it will end the soaking frustration...no tipping over and loosing all of your liquids.  You can also have grooming time or just plain relaxing time with your horse while getting the soaking or medicating need accomplished.

The EasySoakers range in sizing from Small to XXX Large to accomodate many different hoof sizes. We also have valuable video clips at our website to assist with installation and removal to make your experience much better.  Happy Booting!!!

As with any hoof or leg related injury, consult your veterinarian or hoof care professional for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
